Governor Brendan T. Byrne Resources

Additional resources for Governor Byrne can be found at:

The New Jersey State Archives
The New Jersey State Archives is the repository of governor’s official papers, though each governor may select which papers they wish to donate.  Governor Byrne’s collection contains several hundred cubic feet of information, catalogued and accessible by visiting the archives in Trenton. A finding aid is available through the website.

Rutgers Library
Alexander Library at Rutgers University holds personal papers of Governor Byrne, spanning 1928 through 2006.  The materials include 18 cubic feet of Governor Byrne’s papers covering his time as governor and beyond.  These materials are described online and can be accessed by visiting the Special Collections and University Archives, within Rutgers University Libraries.

Seton Hall University’s Msgr. William Noe Field Archives and Special Collections Center
The Brendan T. Byrne Collection, housed at Seton Hall University’s Msgr. William Noe Field Archives and Special Collections Center, consists of approximately forty-five cubic feet of Byrne’s personal papers. The collection, while containing small numbers of photographs, ephemera and records pertaining to the Democratic National Committee, focuses mainly on the 1973 and 1977 campaigns. Seton Hall’s campaign files, while analogous in many ways (such as document types) to Rutgers’ holdings, are more voluminous and contain more research files on Byrne’s opponents, as well as more evidence of the day-to-day operations of a campaign through items such as expenditure files and earnings records.

The New Jersey Digital Legal Library
The New Jersey Digital Legal Library contains a growing collection of executive orders cast prior to 1990, including the complete collection of 113 orders issued by Governor Byrne. This collection consists of a chronological list of each executive order, with a summary of the order, references to any previous orders it affected or subsequent orders that affected it, and the date that the order was issued. Each order is viewable by clicking on the number associated with it.

The New Jersey State Website – Executive Orders of the Governor
The state of New Jersey maintains a collection of every executive order signed by each governor since 1990, but also contains four of the 113 orders issued by Governor Byrne. This collection consists of a chronological list of each executive order, with a summary of the order, references to any previous orders it affected or subsequent orders that affected it, and the date that the order was issued. Each order is viewable by clicking on the number associated with it.
