Governor Richard J. Hughes: The Politics of Personality
Lecture and book signing by Professor John B. Wefing of Seton Hall University School of Law and author of new biography of Governor Hughes

Among New Jersey ’s governors, Richard J. Hughes is often cited for his remarkable political skills, pursuing his policy goals through melding his easy-going personality with a keen sense of the individual needs of friend and foe alike. This program, convened to mark the publication by Rutgers University Press of the new biography of the Governor by Professor John B. Wefing of the Seton Hall University School of Law, will discuss how Governor Hughes utilized those skills during his time in office and whether the politics of personality has any continuing relevance today for governors and other political executives in a climate increasingly partisan and driven by special interests.

The program will include a talk by Professor Wefing, followed by a discussion among a panel including

  • Michael Murphy, the Governor's stepson
  • Raymond Bateman, former Senate president and 1977 Republican gubernatorial nominee
  • Richard Leone, former special assistant to the Governor and State Treasurer in Byrne Administration
  • Joel Sterns, former Counsel to the Governor and
  • Joseph Katz, former communications director for the Governor
